The people of Gorano village launched a ‘long march’ on foot from Islamkot, Tharparkar to Karachi against the building of Gorano dam on Monday.
With the construction of the dam in full swing, 12 villages are likely to be affected near Gorano.
A large number of local residents including women and children took part in the march. Locals from the area fear to lose their sources of livelihood saying the dam will dismantle everything on its way.
From their houses to farmlands, livestock, trees and waterways, say protestors. Calling their protest a ‘long march’, the foot marchers demanded shifting of dam’s site from Gorano village.
Almost 1500 acres of land is projected to fall under the site of the dam, affecting nearly 15000 people.
During my recent visits to Islamkot, I saw many protestors camped outside the local press club in protest.Occasionally, politicians do show up to pay lip service or for photo-op without helping us, told me one of the protestors.
