The death toll from the oil tanker explosion in Ahmadpur Sharqia, Bahawalpur has climbed to 206, according to the hospital sources.

Last month oil tanker incident claimed 150 lives on the spot while more than 100 people had received burn injuries, many of whom are said to be in critical condition.

Those who were in critical condition were shifted to Nishtar Hospital in Multan and Jinnah Hospital in Lahore.

With the latest casualty of 18 years Mohsin at the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, the death toll reached to 206.

The incident took place on June 25 on the eve of Eid when a speeding oil tanker overturned on the main road and exploded after the villagers from Ramzanpur Joya, near Bahawalpur had gathered to collect the leaking oil.

Police had claimed that they had tried to disperse people from the site, but all efforts went in vain as people did not bother to pay heed to the police warnings.

The cause of the explosion is still not known but it is believed that a spark from the nearby parked cars or motorbikes may have been the cause of the fire.

According to the rescue officials, most of the dead bodies were charred to death beyond recognition.
